It was funny, smart, and way more realistic than we expected it to be. Now, that said, it was still a movie We must always remember, there is a difference, so the “lessons” the film is dishing out should be taken with a grain of salt. I’ll admit that I didn’t read Steve Harvey’s best seller “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” when it first came out; not because I’m a hater, but rather because I’d already met a good man by then and wasn’t totally sold on the idea that I needed to read the book to keep him around. I read it a few years later, mostly out of curiosity. I’d heard so many women swear they’d “turned the tables” on the men in their lives by using a rule from Harvey’s playbook, so you know I had to see what all the fuss was about. I was impressed with the empowerment behind much of his advice, I’ll admit. But, I wasn’t convinced enough to walk around preaching Harvey’s sermons to the masses.

Any woman who has devoted hours to swiping through Tinder pictures of shirtless men posing with fish and fielded hundreds of cheesy pickup lines can confirm that heterosexual dating is soul-sucking work. However, I cannot relate; I have a percent success rate when it comes to turning first dates into long-term, committed relationships. This is because I have only been in one in my 26 years on earth. I was a late bloomer partially out of resistance. I avoided dating apps and proceeded to live my life making no particular effort to meet men, eventually befriending one and going on a date that turned into my current loving, supportive relationship of three and a half years.
The only advice I followed was the kind that is offensively unhelpful until it actually works: Just be yourself! I like Steve Harvey; two of my favorite things are game shows and live TV mishaps. He brings an incredible deadpan performance to every episode of Family Feud , and his mishandling of the Miss Universe Pageant winner announcement, while possibly traumatizing for the contestants involved, was iconic.
This is all to say that he is about as qualified as I, Miss One Date, am to be doling out dating and relationship advice. In the year , I thought his book would be collecting dust at my local library, but, at the time of this writing, it was checked out and had 15 holds.

Armstrong says very few women actually realize how different thinking is between men and women, yet desires remain the same. The only way that I have discovered that men and women are alike is in our core desire.
A desire to be loved, a desire to be accepted exactly the way that we are. And a desire to love, to love fully and to have one’s love fully received and cherished.
If anything can make you long for the s, it’s the prospect of looking for love when dating is governed by regimented thinking.
And as men, we know that. We have taken advantage of it. As soon as a woman starts registering her complaint, we call it nagging. We let you know it will drive us away. Now why would a woman not be concerned about her financial future? But we have to have these three things. The problem with women is they have this great spectrum of what love is, and they want it reciprocated the same way they give it out. But we men can only nurture to a certain degree. I understand. It never ceases to amaze me how much people talk about relationships, think about them, read about them, ask about them—even get in them without a clue how to move them forward. I discovered this when my career transitioned to radio with the Steve Harvey Morning Show. Back when my show was based in Los Angeles, I created a segment called Ask Steve, during which women could call in and ask anything they wanted to about relationships.
You name the topic, somebody asked me about it. And heading up the list of topics women wanted to talk about was—you guessed it—men. When I step back from the jokes, and the microphone gets turned off and the lights in the studio go down, and I think about what women ask me every morning on my show, I get incredibly perplexed—perplexed because even though my callers have all presumably had some experience with men whether they are friends, boyfriends, lovers, husband, fathers, brothers, or co-workers , these women still genuinely want to know how to get the love they want, need, and deserve.
With this in mind, I stopped joking around and got very real with my audience. Through my answers, I started imparting wisdom about men—wisdom gathered from working more than half a century on one concept: how to be a man.
